Lake Osakis Feasibility Study

Background
Lake Osakis is a highly valued recreational lake and is widely regarded as one of Minnesota’s top fisheries. Over time, the lake has experienced persistent water quality and sediment challenges that threaten its ecological health, recreational use, and long‑term sustainability. In response, the Sauk River Watershed District, in collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, initiated a comprehensive planning effort to restore Lake Osakis and protect its role within the community and surrounding environment.
This lake restoration effort is supported by multiple funding sources, including the Clean Water Fund, and reflects a shared commitment to science‑based, collaborative solutions.
The Project
HEI is supporting a multi‑phase watershed and lake restoration planning effort in coordination with the District and the US Army Corps of Engineers. The project began with a public kick-off meeting where local representatives and community members had the opportunity to view survey equipment, ask questions, and learn about the project goals and planning process.
Following the kick-off meeting, HEI completed an intensive 2‑week field survey to establish a detailed understanding of lake conditions. Our team conducted lake bathymetric and sediment surveys, evaluated sediment accumulation and phosphorus release potential, and assessed watershed and near‑channel sources of sediment and nutrients.
Our team used the information gathered during the survey to complete hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to characterize water quantity contributions to Lake Osakis.
Building on this foundation, HEI is identifying and evaluating restoration alternatives throughout the watershed and lake. These alternatives are being screened and ranked based on established management goals, feasibility, environmental benefits, and planning‑level costs.
The results will support development of a comprehensive plan that outlines practical, implementable actions to improve water quality, habitat, and overall lake function.
- Completed lake bathymetric, sediment, and phosphorus analyses to quantify internal loading and sediment accumulation.
- Evaluated watershed and near‑channel sediment and nutrient sources using established models.
- Identified and assessed restoration alternatives to improve water quality, habitat, and lake function.
- Supporting development of a comprehensive restoration plan in coordination with regional stakeholders.
