City of Fargo Lift Stations #11 and #57 Replacement

City of Fargo Lift Stations #11 and #57 Replacement

Background

Structures like lift stations are critical components of the stormwater conveyance and flood risk reduction infrastructure for the City of Fargo. Upgraded in-town levees and the completed Fargo-Moorhead Diversion channel provided some flood protection. However, Fargo was still susceptible to rainfall-drive flooding along the river and in the drains that wind through the city. To combat this, the City of Fargo retained HEI for the reconstruction of Lift Stations #11 and #57.

The Project

Both lift stations had inefficient pumping capacity for the flows directed to them. There was only one pump located in Lift Station #11, which did not meet the City’s current standards. HEI started the project by updating existing InfoSWMM models in the watershed so that an accurate sizing of a single replacement lift station and outfall could be completed.

Both lift stations were located on Fargo Park District property, so coordination was required. There were numerous challenges that made this project unique, including limited space, coordination with adjacent property owners, and utilities. Despite these challenges, HEI was able to complete the design on an accelerated timeline, saving the project time and money.

Our design combined the two existing lift stations into a single system with increased capacity and a new box culvert outfall. Additional project tasks included designing the watermain, pavements, and parking lot replacements.

The project was awarded a 2026 NDRM&CPA Gold Star Award in the Site Cast Category and a 2025 Outstanding Design award at both the NDSPE Ch 4/FM Engineers Club awards and the state NDSPE awards.
