US Department of Agriculture Climate Smart Project

Background

Farmers for Sustainable Food (FSF) sought a firm to support the establishment, management, technical analysis, and reporting of environmental outcomes for 10 farmer-led projects. These environmental outcomes include greenhouse gas (GHG), carbon, and water quality. These projects were to be established, in part, using resources from a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities subaward from Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative.

The Project

FSF retained Houston Engineering, Inc. (HEI) to perform services for this 5-year project spanning multiple geographic regions.

Our project services include:

  • Annual Support of Data Collection
HEI provides staff augmentation support to set up data collection protocols. We conduct an annual analysis of environmental metrics with quarterly updates for each of the farmer-led projects and delivers the compiled data to FSF for data collection specialists to work with. The analysis includes field to farm-gate assessments of GHG benefits on participating farms.
  • Annual Reporting and Quarterly Updates
HEI develops annual reports for individual farmers and aggregated reports at the farmer-led project scale for each of the farmer-led projects. We also attend and support the presentation of each of these reports.
  • Development of Master Input Data Collection Sheet
HEI developed and maintains a master input collection data system for environmental metric analysis efforts focusing on GHG/carbon management analysis and other environmental metrics.
  • Detailed Assessments and Science-Based Advisor
HEI conducts detailed specialized GHG assessments using an as-needed basis for farmers participating in the five farmer-led projects. In addition, an HEI staff member participates in the Edge Science Advisory Group to help bring the best science-based approaches to FSF farmer-led projects.
  • HEI supports the development of project package structure that aligns with the project narrative and FSF subaward. It also allows farmers to onboard into climate-smart projects.
  • HEI engages in outreach to farmer-led project candidates to promote participation as well as screen applicants for participation through in-person meetings.
