Sundown Lake Hydraulic Dredging Design

Overview

Background

Sundown Lake, a privately-owned lake in Appanoose County in southern Iowa, is a man-made reservoir constructed in the 1970s. It has been subject to very high rates of sediment deposition resulting from the highly erosive landscape upstream of the lake.

The Project

FYRA Engineering (now part of Houston Engineering, Inc. [HEI]), services to the Sundown Lake Rural Improvement Zone (RIZ) included bathymetric mapping, design, and construction bidding services to dredge more than 125,000 cubic yards of sediment from the bottom of Sundown Lake and contain it in an existing sediment basin. The basin was retrofit as part of FYRA’s design process to enhance sediment consolidation and increase effective storage capacity of the basin.

FYRA utilized a Jon Boat equipped with a dual -frequency echo sounder to map lake bathymetry and help estimate the volume of unconsolidated, soft sediments that accumulated over the lake in past decades, hindering boating, aesthetics, and recreation. FYRA performed benchtop testing of sediment cores collected in the lake to assess potential consolidation and dewatering rates of the sediment when placed in the containment basin. FYRA then modified the existing containment basin, which lacked an underdrain system and the ability to dewater the basin without aid of a pump. The team’s analysis indicated that the effective storage of the sediment basin could be increased by approximately 40% with the addition of an underdrain collection system.

FYRA also prepared final designs, ensured all necessary permits were in place, and developed construction specifications and bidding documents. As part of a second phase of work, FYRA is also designing a new sediment containment basin southwest of the lake to provide additional storage capacity for future sediment dredging projects at Sundown Lake.
