Welcome 2023 Summer Interns


Successful careers begin with positive mentoring, beneficial development of skills, and memorable moments! HEI offers a variety of internship opportunities that translate to future employment possibilities. This summer season, HEI welcomes 10 interns to our team. Internships can provide post-college career growth and plenty of in-the-moment fun. An HEI internship focuses primarily on your goals and long-term success while also fully immersing you into our work culture, fun experiences, and job advancement potential.

Kyle McFadden 

Kyle McFadden is working as a technician intern in our Maple Grove office. He is attending Dunwoody College of Technology majoring in surveying and civil engineering technology. He is expected to graduate in Fall 2024. 

Fun Facts:  

  • Hobbies: Reading, hiking, camping, skiing, and biking 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Going to Zion National Park. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Australia. 
  • Favorite Movie Genres: Action, adventure, and sci-fi. 
  • Favorite Sports: Soccer and ski racing. 
  • Favorite Season: Fall and winter. 
  • Currently Reading: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan.

  • What inspired you about this career? I wanted to have an outdoor job and not sit in an office every day. 

Gabi Schmoll 

Gabi Schmoll is working as an engineering intern in our Fargo office. Originally from Northfield, MN, Gabi is working towards her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State University. She is expected to graduate in Summer 2025. 

Fun Facts 

  • Hobbies: Arts and crafts (painting, pottery, drawing), working out, and reading. 
  • Pet: 11-year-old lab named Remi. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Going to the Dominican Republic with my family. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Italy or Iceland. 
  • Favorite Sports: Baseball/softball and hockey. 
  • Favorite Season: Spring. 
  • Currently Watching: Modern Family.  
  • On My Playlist: Mainly pop and country music. 
  • What inspired you about this career? I want to help develop communities for a better future and I love working in a career that combines design and mathematics. 
  • I am excited to be an intern at HEI because I will be getting to work with the wonderful staff while developing new skills! 

Rob Goff 

Rob Goff is working as a technician intern in our Fargo office. A Fargo native, Rob earned his associate's degree in general studies from Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

  • Hobbies: Golfing, hunting, fishing, and hiking. 
  • Pets: Owns a cocker spaniel named Britta. 
  • Most Memorable Place Visited: Elk City, ID. 
  • Most Memorable Concert: Bob Seger. 
  • Favorite Music: The Black Crowes. 
  • Favorite Sports Team: Calgary Flames. 
  • Favorite Food: Seafood. 
  • Favorite Weekend Activity: Bird hunting. 

Reece Groth 

Reece Groth is working as a technician intern in our Bismarck office. Originally from Mayville, ND, Reece is attending the University of North Dakota working towards his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He is expected to graduate in Spring 2024. 

Fun Facts 

  • Hobbies: Golf, snow skiing, going to the lake 
  • Pets: 3 dogs named Rudy (Scottish Terrier), Ralphie (Scottish Terrier), and Lulu (Mini Goldendoodle). 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Big Sky Montana. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Germany for Oktoberfest. 
  • Most Memorable Concert: WeFest 2022 (Jason Aldean). 
  • Favorite Foods: Pasta, pizza, and burgers.

  • What inspired you about this career? Being able to design a project and see it be completed from start to finish. Engineering is a well-respected profession. My brother is also a civil engineer which got me interested in the field in the first place. 
  • What do you love about your community? I come from a local community, and I love it because you really get to know every person on a personal level, which makes the community feel closer together.  

Kiarah Solum 

Kiarah Solum is working as an engineering intern in our Fargo office. A Fargo native, she is working towards her bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from North Dakota State University. She is expected to graduate in Spring 2025.

  • Hobbies: Photography, traveling, painting, reading, listening to music, and baking. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Denver, CO. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Italy. 
  • Most Memorable Concert: Tim McGraw. 
  • Favorite Foods: Tater tot hotdish and ice cream. 
  • Favorite Movie Genres: Thrillers and romance.

  • What inspired you about this career? I wanted to be a part of helping the environment and communities. I also love math and science. 
  • What do you love about your community? When getting involved, I love that our community hosts events such as farmers markets, sales, and street fairs. I find myself discovering many connections with lots of new people. 
  • I’m excited to be an intern at HEI because I will get to find out what interests me the most and will get experience before I graduate. I am also excited to learn and discover more. 

Ben Manson  

Ben Manson is working as an engineering intern in our Fargo office. A Fargo native, Ben is working toward earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State University. He is expected to graduate in Spring 2025.

  • Hobbies: Rock climbing, basketball, and video games. 
  • Random Facts or Special Skills: I’ve been to Europe twice, I can wiggle my ears, and I like LEGOs. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Venice, Italy. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Norway. 
  • Favorite Foods: Deep dish pepperoni pizza. 
  • Favorite Movie Genres: Comedy or history. 
  • Favorite Sports: Basketball, golf, and rock climbing. 
  • Favorite Season: Fall.

  • What inspired you about this career? Giving back to the city I grew up in. 

Andrew Ayim 

Andrew Ayim works as an engineering intern in our Maple Grove office. Originally from Minneapolis, MN, Andrew is working towards his bachelor’s degree in biosystems and bioproducts engineering from the University of Minnesota. He is expected to graduate in Fall 2024.

  • Hobbies: Fishing, refurbishing furniture, cooking, foraging, camping, and biking. 
  • Pets: Charlie, 10-year-old Cavalier. 
  • Random Facts or Special Skills: I can dunk a basketball. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Going to Ghana! 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: India. 
  • Most Memorable Concert: Shatta Wale concert in Ghana. 
  • Favorite Foods: Right now, it’s shrimp spring rolls. 
  • Favorite Movie Genres: Horror and thriller. 
  • Favorite Sports: Basketball, track and field, and soccer. 
  • Favorite Season: Summer! 
  • On My Playlist: R&B. 
  • Work Fuel: Any kind of fruit that is in season.

  • Dream Car: All-black Toyota 4Runner.  
  • Favorite College Courses: OCHEM I, Principles of Biology II, GIS, and Material and Energy Balances in Biological Systems. 
  • What inspired you about this career? It incorporates sustainability, ecology, and engineering principles all into one job and emphasizes water resources which are a crucial component to any ecosystem. Additionally, I have heard it is very common to perform field work, which sounds like a more exciting work environment. 
  • What do you love about your community? I love how diverse my community is and how much green space there is within my area because it is very relaxing. 
  • I’m excited to be an intern at HEI because I want to learn what it is like to be an engineer and meet new people with experience in this field! 
 

Logan Fonder 

Logan Fonder is working as an engineering intern in our Minot office. A Minot native, he is currently working towards his bachelor’s degree in construction management from North Dakota State University. He is expected to graduate in Spring 2026.

  • Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, and hanging out with friends. 
  • Pets: Bulldog named Sully and a Weiner dog named Weiner. 
  • Random Facts or Special Skills: I am a huge Phoenix Suns fan. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Hawaii. 
  • Top Destination on Bucket List: Greece. 
  • Most Memorable Concert: Tim McGraw. 
  • Favorite Foods: Steak or burgers. 
  • Favorite Movie Genres: Action or comedies. 
  • Favorite Sports: Basketball and football.

  • What inspired you about this career? I think it's satisfying to see the start to finish of a construction project. 
  • What do you love about your community? The support it has behind high school sports. 
  • I’m excited to be an intern at HEI because I am excited to learn and further my career! 

Wasi Ewnetu 

Wasi Ewnetu is working as a technician intern in our Fargo office. Originally from Horace, ND, Wasi is working toward earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He is expected to graduate in 2025.

  • Hobbies: Playing soccer. 
  • Most Memorable Vacation: Trip to Ethiopia in 2021.

  • Favorite Foods: Noodles.

Riley Erickson 

Riley Erickson is working as a technician intern in our Sioux Falls office. Originally from Cokato, MN, Riley is working towards earning his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from South Dakota State University. He is expected to graduate in Fall 2023.

  • What inspired you about this career? I wanted to help people create interesting outdoor places. 
  • What do you love about your community? I think what I really like about it is how calm and welcoming it is. 
  • I’m excited to be an intern at HEI because I want to learn more about how the profession of landscape architecture works and is applied.
