Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges

Background

Houston Engineering, Inc. (HEI) has multiple staff who hold the Bridge Inspection Team Leader Certification through the Federal Highway Administration and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). These staff provide expert inspections and Structure Information Management System (SIMS) inspection and inventory data collection of bridges and culverts for Minnesota clients (primarily counties), ensuring these structures are safe and reliable for public use.

The Project

HEI staff have recently performed a significant number of bridge inspections, including culvert and bridge type structure condition inspections, in Beltrami and Roseau counties. This included independent field inspections, training local staff, and inputting the data into SIMS for Program Administrator approval. These inspections have included several hundred bridges and culverts on public roads. HEI has also performed load rating analysis using the AASHTOWare BrR software. All inspection practices were performed in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) regulation and MnDOT requirements.
