Zion Lutheran Church

Houston Engineering Project
Zion Lutheran Church

Location:  Minot, North Dakota
Client:  Zion Lutheran Church

Background

HEI was approached by a staff member of the Zion Lutheran Church looking for guidance on how to implement a natural playscape playground on church property that could also be shared with the neighborhood. Grant money was available to assist with design and implementation of the project.

The Project

Zion Lutheran Church was looking to build aspects of their outdoor activity space, which included walking trails, seating, a stage, plant materials, fencing, an outdoor kitchen, water fountain and some natural play features. These features are located on the north side of their existing building adjacent to the geothermal wells.

Utilizing a concept provided by the client, HEI created a final site plan allowing the client to seek out bidders and builders for the project elements that were not able to be done in-house. HEI developed a set of plans and quantities for the client to gather construction estimates from local trades and continued to work with the church during this phase.

This included the creation of two ‘mounds’ on-site to account for any drainage features. These earthen structures will allow for two slides and a tunnel.

This project is underway because of numerous volunteers and committee members. Many local providers of materials and labor donated to this great cause.

Project Highlights

  • Improved the outdoor recreation space by implementing walking trails, natural play features, and transformable benches.
  • Completed the planning and design for this project.
  • Provided construction documents for permitting and construction processes.
