HEI Receives ACEC/ND Engineering Exellence Award
The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Dakota (ACEC/ND) recently recognized HEI with the 2016 Engineering Excellence Award for the Cass County Lake Shure Bridge Replacement Project in the structural systems category. The annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value.

About the Project

The Lake Shure community located northwest of Fargo, ND, has over 100 residents that become isolated during extreme flood events. In 2009, 2010, and 2011 this community was reduced to using boats to access their homes for more than 40 days. These flood events took a toll on the residents and life safety issues became a critical concern. After the 2011 flood event, Cass County retained HEI to serve as the civil engineer in the design and construction of a new bridge in the Lake Shure development to provide access for the community during flood events.

In order to avoid overtopping during flood events, HEI replaced the existing, single-span structure with a new 375-foot, five-span concrete bridge. Through the work and cooperation with HEI, the Lake Shure community will never have to be cut off by flood waters again.
