Grand Marais Channel Restoration Wins ACEC/MN Honor Award

On Friday, Jan. 27th, HEI was awarded a 2017 ACEC/MN Engineering Excellence Honor Award for the Grand Marais Channel Restoration project!

The award was announced at the awards ceremony banquet in Minneapolis, MN. The banquet marks the Council's 50th anniversary, which reflected in the theme. Throwback photos from previous banquets were shown, engineers with 50+ years of experience were asked to stand for recognition, and the group pondered where the engineering field would be in 50 years.

The Grand Marais project was led from our Thief River Falls office with support from Maple Grove staff. It involved restoring six miles of channel that had eroded itself into a deep, unmanageable gully. The large-scale project involved many partners who worked to restore and sustain aquatic, riparian, riverine, and prairie habitat while providing a stable outlet that restored hydrology.

Top winners of the night included:

  • People's Choice Award: Stantec's ?Central Park Fountain and Ice Skating Loop in Maple Grove, MN
  • Grand Conceptor Award: KGA Architects and Engineers' Ordway Center Concert Hall Expansion in St. Paul, MN
